Seligman, a renowned psychologist, believed that psychology had become too focused on pathology and the treatment of mental disorders, neglecting the study of what makes life fulfilling and meaningful.
Positive psychology seeks to shift the focus from fixing what is wrong with individuals to understanding and nurturing what is right with them. It aims to identify the factors that contribute to human well-being and develop interventions that can enhance these aspects of life.
One of the key concepts in positive psychology is the notion of happiness. Traditionally, happiness has been seen as a subjective feeling or emotion. However, positive psychology takes a broader perspective and defines happiness as a combination of positive emotions, engagement, and a sense of meaning and purpose in life.
Positive psychologists also study character strengths and virtues, as they believe that these qualities play a crucial role in promoting well-being.
