Understanding Counselling
Counselling is a form of therapy that focuses on providing individuals with guidance, support, and strategies to overcome personal challenges and improve their mental well-being. It is a confidential and collaborative process between a trained professional, known as a counsellor, and a client.
Counselling sessions typically involve open and non-judgmental conversations where clients can freely express their thoughts, emotions, and concerns. The counsellor listens actively, provides empathy, and helps clients gain insights into their feelings and behaviors. Through this process, individuals can develop coping mechanisms, improve their decision-making skills, and work towards personal growth and self-acceptance.
There are various approaches to counselling, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and person-centered therapy. Each approach has its own principles and techniques, but the ultimate goal is to empower individuals to make positive changes in their lives.
Psychological First Aid
Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an approach to providing immediate support and assistance to individuals who have experienced a traumatic event or are in crisis. It aims to reduce distress, promote safety, and support resilience in the aftermath of a crisis or disaster.
PFA is not a substitute for professional counselling or therapy but serves as an initial intervention to stabilize individuals and help them cope with their emotions and reactions. It is typically provided by trained individuals, such as mental health professionals, first responders, or community volunteers.
The core principles of PFA include:
- Ensuring safety and physical well-being
- Providing practical assistance and information
- Listening actively and offering emotional support
- Helping individuals connect with social support networks
- Promoting self-efficacy and empowerment
PFA can be delivered in various settings, such as disaster response situations, emergency departments, or community support centers. It aims to help individuals regain a sense of control, cope with stress, and begin the process of recovery.
Transactional Analysis: Four Areas of Life Positions
Transactional Analysis (TA) is a psychological theory that explores how individuals communicate, interact, and form relationships. It suggests that people operate from one of four life positions, which influence their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
The four areas of life positions in Transactional Analysis are:
- I’m OK, You’re OK: This position reflects a healthy and positive outlook on oneself and others. Individuals with this life position have a sense of self-worth and believe in the worth of others. They approach relationships with empathy, respect, and cooperation.
- I’m OK, You’re Not OK: This position is characterized by a belief in one’s own worthiness but a negative perception of others. Individuals in this position may feel superior or judgmental towards others and may struggle with forming healthy and fulfilling relationships.
- I’m Not OK, You’re OK: This position involves a negative self-perception but a positive view of others. Individuals with this life position may struggle with low self-esteem, feelings of inadequacy, and a constant need for approval and validation from others.
- I’m Not OK, You’re Not OK: This position reflects a negative perception of oneself and others. Individuals in this position may feel helpless, hopeless, and disconnected from others. They may struggle with forming and maintaining relationships.
Transactional Analysis aims to help individuals recognize their life position and work towards developing a more positive and balanced outlook on themselves and others. Through therapy or self-reflection, individuals can gain insight into their patterns of thinking and behavior, and make conscious choices to improve their relationships and overall well-being.
Johari Window: Four Areas of Self-Disclosure
The Johari Window is a model that explores how individuals perceive themselves and are perceived by others. It consists of four areas of self-disclosure, representing different levels of awareness and knowledge about oneself.
The four areas of the Johari Window are:
- Open Area: This area represents information about oneself that is known to both the individual and others. It includes characteristics, behaviors, and emotions that are openly expressed and acknowledged.
- Blind Area: This area represents information about oneself that is unknown to the individual but known to others. It includes blind spots, unconscious biases, or aspects of one’s behavior that others can observe but the individual may be unaware of.
- Hidden Area: This area represents information about oneself that is known to the individual but not disclosed to others. It includes private thoughts, feelings, or experiences that the individual chooses to keep hidden.
- Unknown Area: This area represents information about oneself that is unknown to both the individual and others. It includes undiscovered talents, potential, or aspects of one’s personality that have not yet been explored or realized.
The Johari Window encourages self-awareness, self-disclosure, and feedback from others. By expanding the open area and reducing the blind, hidden, and unknown areas, individuals can enhance their self-understanding, improve communication, and build more authentic and fulfilling relationships.
Four Types of Strokes in Transactional Analysis
In Transactional Analysis, strokes refer to the units of recognition, attention, and communication exchanged between individuals. Strokes can be verbal or non-verbal and can have positive or negative effects on a person’s well-being.
The four types of strokes in Transactional Analysis are:
- Positive Strokes: These are affirming and supportive messages or actions that acknowledge a person’s worth, achievements, or positive qualities. Positive strokes contribute to a person’s sense of self-worth and can enhance their well-being.
- Negative Strokes: These are critical, disapproving, or dismissive messages or actions that devalue a person’s worth or abilities. Negative strokes can have a detrimental impact on a person’s self-esteem and can lead to feelings of inadequacy or resentment.
- Conditional Strokes: These are messages or actions that are contingent upon certain conditions or expectations. Conditional strokes imply that a person’s worth is dependent on meeting specific criteria or fulfilling certain roles. They can create pressure and limit a person’s sense of self-worth and autonomy.
- Unconditional Strokes: These are messages or actions that convey acceptance, love, and support without any conditions or expectations. Unconditional strokes foster a sense of unconditional positive regard and can contribute to a person’s emotional well-being and self-acceptance.
Transactional Analysis aims to help individuals recognize the types of strokes they give and receive, and develop healthier patterns of communication and interaction. By increasing awareness of strokes and their impact, individuals can work towards building more positive and nurturing relationships.
Preventive Steps in Suicide Prevention
Suicide prevention involves proactive measures to identify and support individuals who may be at risk of suicide. It aims to reduce the factors that contribute to suicidal thoughts and behaviors and promote mental well-being.
Some preventive steps in suicide prevention include:
- Education and Awareness: Raising awareness about the signs, risk factors, and available resources for suicide prevention can help individuals recognize when someone may be in distress and provide appropriate support.
- Training and Intervention: Training individuals in mental health first aid and suicide intervention techniques can equip them with the skills to identify and respond to individuals at risk. This can include active listening, providing empathy, and connecting individuals with professional help.
- Access to Mental Health Services: Ensuring that individuals have access to affordable and quality mental health services, including counseling and therapy, can help address underlying issues and provide support to those at risk.
- Reducing Stigma: Working to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide can encourage individuals to seek help without fear of judgment or discrimination. This can involve promoting open conversations, challenging stereotypes, and sharing personal stories of recovery.
- Community Support: Building strong social support networks and fostering a sense of community can provide individuals with a sense of belonging and connection, reducing feelings of isolation and hopelessness.
- Collaboration and Coordination: Collaborating with various stakeholders, including mental health professionals, community organizations, and policymakers, can help implement comprehensive suicide prevention strategies and ensure a coordinated response.
It is important to remember that suicide prevention is a complex issue, and no single approach can guarantee the prevention of all suicides. However, by implementing these preventive steps and creating a supportive environment, we can make significant progress in reducing suicide rates and promoting mental well-being.

1. Counseling with a psychologist can help transform negative thoughts and emotions into positive ones.
2. A person will have 4 positions in that 3 negative and one positive. I’m okay you are not okay, I’m not okay you are okay, I’m not okay you are not okay and I’m okay you are also okay.
3. Sympathetic nervous system, para sympathetic nervous system. Professional psychologist only can give a councelling other than we can only guide the person and forward to the psychologist that is psychological first aid.
4. CBT we want to change negative thoughts
If we involved in a thing 100 percent what we doing, then we can see that 100 percent positive out put
5. Intellectual mind – The intellectual mind seeks logic and reasoning, while the wise mind integrates intuition and experience for balanced decision-making.
6. Johari window, open, blind, hidden, unknown, open area is safe.
Flow=Body+ mind. There are three types of minds. 1. Emotional mind 2. Intellectual mind 3. Vice mind . Vice mind is the good one for human being. Because it is the combination of emotional mind and intellectual mind. Counselling is an guidence for solving problems. Psychologist only give the guidence and also they have Ethics. There are four types of counselling 1. Premarital 2. Post marital 3. Child counselling 4. Career counselling. And also this course offer to know my open area , hidden area, blind spot, and unknown area. These four are the Johari window concepts.open area is good for our life. I am getting 8 out of 8 marks in I am ok you are ok. I am also a parent for 3 years old kid. The parenting concept very useful to me and also my partner.we give unconditional positive stoke to everyone. We should not give unconditional negative stoke to others. Finally this course is very useful for my career. Thank you so much sir.
