Understanding Strokes in Transactional Analysis
In Transactional Analysis (TA), strokes refer to the basic unit of recognition and communication between individuals. They are the fundamental building blocks of human interactions and play a crucial role in shaping our relationships and emotional well-being.
The Four Types of Strokes in TA
In TA, strokes are categorized into four types based on their nature and impact. These types include:

4. Conditional Negative Strokes
Conditional negative strokes are expressions of disapproval, criticism, or rejection that are dependent on certain conditions or expectations. They can create a sense of conditional rejection and may lead to feelings of shame or guilt. Here are ten examples of conditional negative strokes:
- A disapproving comment when someone fails to meet specific standards
- A punishment or criticism for not conforming to certain expectations
- A judgmental response to someone’s failure or mistake
