In Transactional Analysis (TA), a “Stroke” refers to a unit of recognition — anything that acknowledges another person. Strokes are essential for emotional well-being, social bonding, motivation, and psychological growth.

Why Strokes Are Important

Types of Strokes in TA

1. Verbal & Non-Verbal Strokes

  • Verbal: Compliments, appreciation, advice, encouragement
  • Non-Verbal: Smile, eye contact, handshake, pat on the back

2. Positive & Negative Strokes

  • Positive: “You did a great job!”, applause, supportive tone
  • Negative: Criticism, insults, rejection

3. Conditional & Unconditional Strokes

  • Conditional Positive: “I like your work.” (based on performance)
  • Unconditional Positive: “I care about you.” (based on being)
  • Conditional Negative: “Your behaviour was not acceptable.”
  • Unconditional Negative: “You are useless.” (very harmful)

4. Self-Strokes

Strokes we give ourselves in the form of:

  • Self-talk
  • Self-appreciation
  • Taking care of personal needs
